Cliffs of Moher
This joint rampart of rugged, rocky coastline on the edge of the Burren plunges dramatically to silent, Atlantic waves from a height of over 200 metres, (700 feet). Its towering cliff face of sheer visual force is home to many species of sea birds. The cliffs are spectacularly interpreted in the visitor centre.
Dolphin Watching
The sheltered waters of the Shannon Estuary are home to a community of about 100 Bottlenose Dolphins, one of the largest ‘pods’ in Europe. These beautiful creatures can be observed from boat trips operating from Carrigaholt and Kilrush..
Walking / Cycling
On foot or by bike is the best way to explore and fully absorb the beauty of the Region. This widely contrasting countryside is criss-crossed with byways, forest paths, nature trails, county lanes and minor roads, all leading to splendid isolation in the most beautiful parts of the country.
History
Prehistoric monuments, medieval castles, churches and monastic sites retain the glory of a colourful past.
Entertainment
The Shannon Region is brimful of entertainment for people of all ages and ranges from mediaeval banquets, through to music pubs, classical music, concerts, poetry readings, Irish Music nights, theatre, nightclubs and greyhound racing.
Scenic Areas & Drives
The Shannon Region extends from the wild Atlantic coasts of Counties Clare to the equally dramatic but usually placid lowlands of the Shannon valley and the great midland bogs, lakes and wetlands. Much of it, far from the regular tourist honeypots, is the preserve of visitors whose first love is heritage and landscape.
Equestrian
Ireland's traditional preocupation with horse riding is evident throughout the Shannon Region. The geography of the Region is ideally suited to horse riding throughout the entire year. Mountain trails, forest paths, country lanes and deserted beaches beckon.
Family Activities
The Shannon Region is idyllic for families with younger children. The Region is dominated by water and children like water in all its forms, particularly the beaches. They also like our folk parks, pet farms, waterworlds, show-caves, dolphin-watching boat tours, River-boat tours, boat visits to different islands, forest walks, the castles and the museums (older children) and a horse-riding lesson is a special experience.
